Please follow the tips below when sharing the roadway with a school bus. Sharing the Road with School Buses If you're driving behind a bus, allow a greater following distance than if you were driving behind a car. It will give you more time to stop once the yellow lights start flashing. It is illegal in all 50 states to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children. Never pass a bus from behind – or from either direction if you're on an undivided road – if it is stopped to load or unload children If the yellow or red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended, traffic must stop The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children; stop far enough back to allow them space to safely enter and exit the bus Be alert; children often are unpredictable, and they tend to ignore hazards and take risks   Also, I would like to take this time to thank our school bus drivers for their dedication to ensuring safe transport of our children on a daily basis. Working together, we can continue to allow safe space for our buses to operate.    Matt Hixson × -- Dear HCS Business and Industry Partners –   Our stakeholder meeting, previously scheduled for Thursday evening (March 19), has been cancelled due to an abundance of caution during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, your input is extremely important to us as we prepare our strategic plan. Please take a few minutes to complete survey linked below.   https://forms.gle/ukDqGso74kLQUGZj8 Many thanks for your continued support of Hawkins County Schools.  × -- Parents and Stakeholders,    As you are aware, Tennessee is dealing with widespread flu symptoms.  We monitored school attendance, both for staff and students.  We finished the day with 94% student attendance and minimal staff absences.  With these figures in mind, we will continue to hold school as normal and monitor student and staff health conditions.      Please keep in mind the following procedures occurring at our school sites: Nurses have prepared separate holding facilities for any student exhibiting flu-like symptoms (where available).  For older students, masks are provided. Teachers, support staff, administrators, and food service employees are all monitoring students and encouraging healthy practices. Telemedicine  service is available, limiting your need to physically see a doctor.  Please see the HCS website or your school office for permission forms. Custodial and teaching staff are cleaning surfaces multiple times daily. Please keep in mind the following regarding your children: Please do not send your child to school if they are exhibiting flu-like symptoms and/or running a fever. Please do not send your child back to school if they cannot maintain normal body temperatures for more than 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medication. Please call and ask to speak with a school nurse if you have questions regarding your child's health. We are participating in a Ballad Health, regional superintendent conference call tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 to determine what our health providers recommend moving forward.   I appreciate everyone's support in maintaining safe classrooms in Hawkins County,  Matt Hixson Flu Guide of Parents flu-guide-for-parents-2018.pdf Flu Letter Flu Letter.pdf × -- Joint HCS and RCS Parent Letter .
